Based in San Diego, CA, JD Clapp writes fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction with a gritty slant. As a professor (USC), JD is an expert in addiction, a theme that runs through much of his work.
JD’s writing has appeared in over 60 different literary journals and magazines including Cowboy Jamboree, The Dead Mule, trampset, and Punk Noir. He also occasionally publishes photos and hybrid works.
In 2023, his story Faint Memories of a Disaster, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in nonfiction. JD’s short fiction, One Last Drop, was a finalist in the Hemingway Shorts, Short Story competition. In 2024, he was nominated for Best of the Net in poetry (Revolution John), fiction (Afterimages and A Thin Slice of Anxiety), and a Pushcart Prize in nonfiction (Revolution John).
He has published two chapbooks: Five Things that Happened in Bars and Underbelly:Grit Poems (both Alien Buddha Press). His first novella and short story collection, Poachers and Pills will be published in 2025 by Cowboy Jamboree Press. He also has a second story collection, A Good Man Goes South (forthcoming, 2025) by Anxiety Press.
